Word From The North

St. Peter’s Fly Shop, Ft. Collins - (970) 498-8968 (Dave Cook, Andy Griguhn, Brady Hanson, Grant Houx).

The ice is finally coming off several stretches of the Poudre. Look for 10cfs flows on the North Fork below Seaman Reservoir, 15-to-40cfs flows in the main stem from Gateway Park downstream and similar conditions in the hatchery area as well. Flows should only increase with the warmer weather, increasing the likelihood of more frequent midge hatches and the much anticipated hatches of April olives. Currently, action is rated poor to fair on midge pupae.

Angler’s Roost, Ft. Collins - (970) 377-3785 (Gordon Waldmier, Rick Takahashi, Mark Brumbraugh, and Jason Haddix).

Midge hatches continue to dominate the action on the Big T where RS2s, Lint Bugs, JuJubies, and similar midge pupae patterns in sizes from 18-22 provide the best chances of success. Most of the guys I’ve talked to are doing very well on the small stuff.

Estes Angler - (970) 586-2110 (Grant Rollo, Devan Ence)

The Estes Angler was still closed as this issue went to press, but their phone message advises they will open on April 1st, after which we can expect condition and fishing reports for the Upper Big T and Rocky Mountain National Park Waters. I suspect that, for the next two weeks anyway, “things will be slow” but we can look forward to increased bug and fish activity as spring begins to unlock the high country.
