A Concern

At this time of year we should all be concerned about water temperature and water conditions.   The northwestern part of the state has not received an ample amount of rain to sustain decent flow in the rivers.

The Yampa, White, Little Snake, and Elk rivers are all very low.  When you have low water, the temperature of the water will get too high.   Carry a temperature gauge (thermometer), and if the water gets above 68 degrees, stop fishing.

As most of you know or may have recently read, Antero Reservoir is now open after being closed for almost five years.  A lot of fish were taken in Antero, including the state record cut/bow.  I have been told that the fish are not picky and will take just about anything you threw at them.  Due to the anticipated crowds, I will wait for a couple of weeks before I go there.

If I were to choose a place to go fishing at this time of year, would probably pick the Blue, Eagle or Arkansas River drainages. These rivers seem to have enough water to sustain good hatches. And speaking of hatches, the month of August is a time of transition. Instead of hatches appearing during mid-day, they will now start to happen in the evening. August is also the time for green drakes on the Roaring Fork. Looks like we have a lot of different rivers to choose from this month.

What a year for dry flies!   Keep those hoppers and ants close at hand.

The book of the month is any book in the “Fly Fishing Guide” series - for example, “Fly Fishing Guide to Colorado.” You can find just about any state in this series which gives information on towns, hatches, maps, access points, flies, etc. This is good bargain information.
