St. Peter’s Fly Shop, Ft. Collins - www.stpetes.com (970) 498-8968 (Dave Cook, Andy Griguhn, Brady Hanson, Grant Houx).

The Poudre is still running a bit high, but flows are clear and the fishing good. Cast to the edges and “soft water” corners and you should find some good action. There are lots of hatches throughout the day and fish are eating on the surface, but big nymph rigs are still the most productive. Large (sizes 8-12) stonefly nymphs: Twenty Inchers, Golden Stones, Bead head Princes - and similar nymphs, along with dry hopper patterns, adult stoneflies and various Green Drake ties should continue producing well into August. Gray Reef is also fishing well. Red Rock Worms, San Juan Worms, a variety of midges, PMDs, Golden Stones, baetis and streamer patterns are all taking fish.

Delaney Buttes - Anecdotal reports indicate the Delaneys are all fishing extremely well with Callibaetis nymphs trailing a “smallish” leech pattern accounting for most of the action. Large Chironomid (jumbo ju-jubees, snow cones, etc.), streamer and crawdad patterns are also very productive. The “pigs” are most active between sundown and sunup, so fish after dark if you want to tangle with the five and six-pounders. And keep plenty of Deet on hand; mosquitoes are fierce in both size and number.

Flows have finally dropped in the park (117 cfs on the Big T), and fishing is excellent. Pale Morning Duns have been very active during the late morning and early afternoon. Try PMD Wulff, thorax and parachute dries in sizes 16-18; Pheasant Tails and similar nymphs subsurface. The Drakes are on too, and can provide some excellent dry fly fishing in the afternoons. Fish size 12 Drake Wulffs, CDC Drakes and Parachute Adams. Royal Wulffs take fish during this hatch too. Use Stimulators size 14-16, Elk Hair Caddis 16-18, Visible Caddis 16-18, Z-wing Caddis 16-18 or Hotwire Caddis in 16-18 to address the hopper and caddis activity.
