Word From The North

St. Peter’s Fly Shop, Ft. Collins - (970) 498-8968 (Frank Praznik, Dave Cook, Andy Griguhn, Brady Hanson, Grant Houx)

Flows on the Poudre are pathetically low and clear (from 3-5cfs) depending on exact on location, but anglers who are willing and able to present tiny flies on long fine leaders to trout in skinny water can actually do well. Black beauties, and a variety of similar subsurface midge patterns in sizes ranging from 18-to-26 will be your best bet, though it’s not unheard of to luck into a surface hatch, in which case tiny dries and emergers can make for a lot of fun,

Angler’s Roost, Ft. Collins  - (970) 377-3785 (Gordon Waldmier, Mark Brumbraugh, Jason ?).

Rick is just back from the “Juan” where he said the weather was cold, the water low, clear, and mossy and the fishing tough. He’d advise prospective trippers to fish the upper reaches below the dam down to the upper flats, and take a look at the trough on the near bank side where they’ll find trout holding in deeper water. Red Hots with crystal flash under the rib produced some action. Midges and baetis were producing in the Texas hole.

Estes Angler - (970) 586-2110 (Grant Rollo, Devan Ence)

Estes angler is closed for the season and will reopen in April of 2008. However, they’re still offering guided trips and will respond to all requests left at the above number.
