There’s usually not a lot a fella can write about the Big T. in December, other than it is pretty much frozen and it’ll be a while (four months or so) before the fishing gets serious again. There is however, a piece of water that remains ice free year around that provides us diehards with some fun sport, if you’re willing to brave the cold winds of Estes Park.

The "go-cart" stretch certainly isn’t a secret anymore and it’s a much-improved area thanks to the efforts of the local Trout Unlimited chapter and the Colorado Division of Wildlife. This quarter mile long stretch of the Big T. used to be little more than a channeled sucker water as it exited Olympus Dam and wound through an open meadow to the bridge downstream. Shallow water, no cover or structure, and a tremendous amount of pressure from the tourist crowds meant that there were few trout to be found.

Now there are riffles and pools, under-cut banks, spawning areas and generally all the stuff that attracts and holds trout. This could be the Big T’s most productive catch and release area this winter season.

 Happy Holidays
Greg
