February on the Big T. is a kind of like reading the fly fishing catalogs we get in the mail this time of year. The images promise good sport but you can't really enjoy the real thing. This is the month of false spring, where Chinook winds sweep down the canyon and open up a few isolated spots in the river ice. It looks much more promising than it really is.
The Big T. is still locked in winters grip and the few open spots are usually in shallow water where there are no fish. They're still holding in the deeper pools waiting for the real spring thaw to commence. So.... There might be a few fish to be caught in those shallow open spots, but it's only a tease.
Keep hanging on friends, next month will start the true thaw that signals the start of the season. IF we don't get another arctic cold front blowing through. Nahhh.... We never get those in spring, now do we?
