The “Nothing” Month

February can be such a nothing month as far as fly-fishing is concerned.  Of course, you can poke a hole in the ice and try and cast your fly into that little hole.

We can wail about the lack of fishing, or we can look around to see what else there is to do this month. On February 7th and 8th Bass Pro Shop is having a fly fishing show with knot-tying, fly-tying, and casting. Word has it that they are going to have a special section for kids. On February 14th the West Denver Chapter of TU is hosting their 35th Annual Fly Tying Clinic at the Jefferson County fairgrounds. The fee is $10 with discount coupons available at most Fly Shops. This is a great clinic with 35 local tiers showing you their special techniques. If you don’t go for the tying, at least stop and get one of their great chilidogs.  Yes, I know that the clinic is held on Valentine’s Day, but the show closes at 3:00 PM, so you still have time to get flowers and candy for that special one in your life.

However, if this February is anything like January, they’re maybe some good fishing on the Platte River down by Deckers.   Quite a few of my friends fish the area below Night Hawk hill and have reported fish over 16 inches being taken on the usual midge patterns.

The Frying Pan over by Basalt is always good in February, and checking my journal reveals that a trip to the Blue River may also produce results using the typical midge patterns.

If you haven’t purchased Charlie Craven’s new book, do so!  This is great reading about fly tying.  I have learned some new techniques from this book even after tying for about 30 years.

There you have it - some things to do in the month of February. If you still get bored, build a rod for the spring.
