Word From The North

St. Peter’s Fly Shop, Ft. Collins - (970)-498-8968  www.stpetes.com

(Dave Cook, Andy Griguhn, Jin Choy, Grant Houx)

Much of the main stem of the Poudre River is frozen, but you can still find some open water in the lower canyon and up near the hatchery. Midges are the prevalent bug on the water and fish are coming to the surface on and off through the day. If you don’t spot rising fish, nymph the deeper runs and holes. A trick for when the fish are eating small dries is to use a big dry as a lead pattern or try a little Bio Strike.

Angler’s Roost, Ft. Collins (970)-377-3785  www.anglers-roost.com

(Gordon Waldmier, Rick Takahashi, Mark Brumbraugh, and Jason Haddix).

Fishing is fair to good on the South Platte where flows are moving along at 168 cfs in the canyon water below Cheeseman Reservoir, and at about 80 cfs in the Dream Stream. Midges, of course, dominate the action and a variety of local and regional favorites as well as the standard RS2s, Black Beauties, Zebra Midges and the like are all taking fish.

Estes Angler - (970)-586-2110   http://estesangler.com   (Grant Rollo, Devan Ence)

Estes Angler remains closed for the season, but the Big T continues to produce along most of its entire length - particularly for anglers casting tiny BWOs and midges. You may find shelf ice starting to form in the darker, shadowed reaches of the canyon.

Note: This is the time of year to take a beginning or remedial fly tying class to learn new tricks or polish up old skills. Call the shop (970)-667-1107 for a schedule of Julie’s classes, then sign up.
