Word From The North

Estes Angler, Estes Park- (970) 586-2110 (Grant Rollo, Devan Ence)

Estes angler is closed for the season and will reopen in April of 2008. However, they’re still offering guided trips and will respond to all requests left at the above number.

St. Peter’s Fly Shop, Ft. Collins - (970) 498-8968 (Dave Cook, Andy Griguhn, Brady Hanson, & Grant Houx)

Well I can tell you from just having driven the entire length of the river from below Cameron pass to Fort Collins, nobody will be catching much of anything on the Poudre until there’s a dramatic shift in weather and water flow. The Poudre is a miles-long ice sculpture of uncommon beauty, broken only by intermittent trickles of open water. A good deal of the river is a scary looking skeleton of snow dusted rocks and dry riverbed. Better head for the tailwaters.

Angler’s Roost, Ft. Collins (970) 377-3785 (Gordon Waldmier, Mark Brumbraugh, Vince Wilcox).

Without a significant change in these frigid temperatures, fishing anywhere local is almost out of the question. Midging the tailwaters is your best bet now. The Blue, San Juan, and South Platte are among the most popular. Try such fare as Stuck in the Shuck midge patterns in size 20-24; Yong's Specials, brown and cream, in sizes #22-26; KF midge pupa #20-24; Little Green Machines #20-24, Lint Bugs #18-20, F.B.I. #18-20, Red Hots #18-24, Foam Wing rs2 #16-20, and similar.
