Word From The North

St. Peter’s Fly Shop, Ft. Collins - (970) 498-8968 www.stpetes.com                                                      (Dave Cook, Andy Griguhn, Jin Choy, Grant Houx). Poudre River.

The river has moved into winter mode although on nice weather days there is still some open water in the lower canyon. Midges prevail and fish will take them on the surface periodically through the day. Watch for rising fish and if not visible nymph the deeper runs and holes. When fishing small dries (midges), add a bigger dry fly or a little Bio Strike to your leader to use both as a strike indicator and to help you keep track of your drift.

Angler’s Roost, Ft. Collins  - (970) 377-3785 www.anglers-roost.com                                                               (Gordon Waldmier, RickTakahashi, Mark Brumbraugh, and Jason Haddix).

Lake John and the Delaney’s are frozen, of course, so your best bet now is to fish Colorado tailwater streams. The South Platte in particular is fishing well. As you’d expect, midge and small baetis patterns will be most effective. Gordon suggests Zebra, Rojo and Mercury midge patterns, Purple Baetis nymphs, Black Beauties and that sort of thing. Check weather conditions before making the trip.

Estes Angler - (970) 586-2110 http://estesangler.com    (Grant Rollo, Devan Ence)

Estes Angler is closed for the season, but the Big T continues to produce along its most of its entire length - particularly for anglers casting tiny BWOs and midges. You may find shelf ice starting to form in the darker, shadowed reaches of the canyon.
