Word From The North

St. Peter’s Fly Shop, Ft. Collins - (970) 498-8968 (Dave Cook, Andy Griguhn, Brady Hanson and Grant Houx)

The boys at St. Pete’s say, “Avoid the rivers and hit the lakes for now.” Chironomids seem to be the name of the game at this point on most lakes, although there are early signs of Callibaetis. Dowdy and Parvin have been producing some really nice fish on streamers.

The Delaney Buttes are open and fishing well from both the edges and for float tubers using Chironomid patterns. Lastly, the warm water fishing has really improved and there have been scattered reports of Small Mouth, Wipers and Walleye from the local fisheries.

Angler’s Roost, Ft. Collins  - (970) 377-3785 (Gordon Waldmier, Mark Brumbraugh, Vince Wilcox).

Gordon rates the Poudre as poor (runoff is extreme); the Big T as fair, and the North Platte at Gray Reef as fishing really well to midge and BWO hatches. RS2s, Copper Johns, Prince nymphs, Jujubes in sizes 18-22 are also producing hookups.

Estes Angler - (970) 586-2110 (Grant Rollo, Devan Ence)

Flows are high (350 cfs) in the park, but fishable if you search out the eddies and backwaters. Caddis and PMDs are hatching in fair numbers, and patterns matching those species are generating some pretty good action. Activity will pick up as water levels drop.
