Caution

Maybe it’s just me, but this winter seems to be dragging on and on. Cold nights have me using caution in my selection of wintertime places to fish. Most of my friends know that I hate to fish in the winter, but some 50 and 55-degree temperatures have me searching the weather channel for the next possible mild day.

March always brings major winds, which can prove to be snow eaters. I hope Waterton Canyon and the Deckers area start to break loose from the grip of shelf ice and even solid ice. Eleven Mile Canyon is fishing well with small red midges close to the dam, but reports of below-zero temperatures early in the morning have kept me away. The Blue River by the outlet shops was fishing well in early February, but that drive through the tunnel can be a real bear. The Arkansas below Pueblo Reservoir is at 45 cfs and not fishing well. Wait until they start releasing water about the middle of March for this fishery. I did find some open water on the St. Vrain, but the fish were pretty small. My choice is to stay home and reread (for the twenty-fifth time) all my old fly-fishing magazines.

New fly tying item: “tinsel thread”!  What a great innovation. It looks like a combination of “flashabou” and thread twisted together. What makes it great is that it comes in small sizes.

I have to get back on track with the book of month. Well, this month I suggest the two-volume set of Ernest Schweibert’s  NYMPHS.  Unbelievable - great stories along with minute details of every nymph in the world. You will be amazed!
