Word From The North

St. Peter’s Fly Shop, Ft. Collins - (970) 498-8968 (Dave Cook, Andy Griguhn, Brady Hanson, Jin Choy, Grant Houx).

Flows range from 27 to 55 cfs in the Poudre with the heavier flows in the upper river. Olives and March Browns are showing with greater frequency as the river warms up and will no doubt increase as the month proceeds. Grant and the guys suggest trying Wired Stoneflies, 20 Inchers, Copper Johns and Prince Nymphs in sizes 12-16.

Fish Barr's Emergers, Purple Back Baetis or Juju Baetis patterns in sizes 16-20 during the olive hatches, as well as standard and parachute dry fly patterns once the fish start whacking the duns. Bread Crusts and various caddis larvae/pupae in smaller sizes will also take fish.

Angler’s Roost, Ft. Collins (970) 377-3785 (Gordon Waldmier, Rick Takahashi, Mark Brumbraugh, and Jason Haddix).

Flows are up to 1800 cfs on The Reef and clarity varies depending on location, but anglers are still taking some nice fish on SJ Worms, Red Rock Worms, Minute Midges in Red and Tan, RS2s, split foam backs, various scuds and buggers.

The San Juan is flowing at about 2300 cfs and fish have been taking egg patterns, SJ Worms, various red midge and emerger patterns in the afternoons.

Estes Angler - (970) 586-2110 (Grant Rollo, Devan Ence)

Grant reports flows in the upper Big T are running at 78.5 cfs., and the fishing as good-to-very good. Look for daily midge hatches from 10:00 AM to 2:30-3:00 PM. Try Stuck-in-the-Shuck, Hi-Vis Midges and Griffith’s Gnats. If nymphing, try Brassies, Lint Bugs, Miracle Nymphs and similar fare in sizes 18-22. On overcast or rainy days you can have some exceptional dry fly fishing to Blue-winged olive hatches with BWO Hatchmasters, Spotlights, and various BWO thorax and parachute patterns. A Parachute Adams can also be a good choice when fish are rising. Expect the Olives between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Fish Blue-winged Olive nymph patterns - Pickpockets, BH Baetis Nymphs, BH Pheasant Tails and in sizes 18-22 until the fish start actively taking the duns.

The moraine reach is open and flowing at about 11 cfs, but the fishing is tough. Midges and tiny nymphs produce best right now, but dry fly action will pick up for certain later in the month.
