Picky Picky Picky During November

I tend to be a little picky with my fishing days in the month of November. Watching the weather channel becomes a passion. I look for high pressure systems and plan my trips around those systems. Remember, if the barometric pressure is below 92, stay home.

Tailwaters are the most popular areas for the next few months. The November tailwater I like is Eleven Mile Canyon.  Tricos can still be hatching there at noon and the latest reports are very favorable for bigger fish. The “Arky” in Pueblo has varying releases, so check the flow before you go.  I always like the Colorado River below Gore Canyon with Autumn Splendors and possibly a BWO hatch along the edges.  If I see reds or spawning activity, I move on to the next section of the river.

Some of the tailwaters close to Denver can fish great this time of year with small attractors. Clear Creek can still have open water between the tunnels. Black Beauty or the Angel is the fly of choice for midgin’.

November is the month for taking inventory of all my fly tying materials. I throw out a bunch of old stuff because I know that most of the manufacturers will have new and improved selections to improve the patterns in my boxes.

Book of the month is Hatches II by Ernest Schweibert, Lyons Press. This is a typical “Ernie” book with a lot of emphasis on detail, stories, and Latin names for his bugs. I like this book because it completes a small series he started years ago. Completion of this book was done by his son due to Ernie’s death. His work will be greatly missed.
