October is leaves turning, football, crisp mornings with mellow sunny days. Sweaters and long sleeved flannel shirts. Carmel apples following pot-roast dinners. Put the lawn mower and gardening tools away.
These and many other things are the harbinger of true fall for me, and of course so is the late season baetis that rule the hatches on the Big T. This is one of the few times that the trout actually get pretty picky, because there are so many of the #20-#24 mayflies around. You'll find them in the calmer water in the middle of the deeper pools in the C&R section in midday.
Think small and sparse for sure and for heaven's sake use a fine tippet and make sure that you're getting an absolutely dead drift. Any drag and forget it! The water is low which will make the fish all the more skittish. But you're up for a challenge, right?
Tight lines.
